Life in the UK Test 2026: What Changed and What Didn’t

The core test is unchanged in 2026: 24 questions, 45 minutes, a 75% pass mark and a £50 fee. The important recent changes concern how candidates prove their identity, particularly eVisas and expired BRP/BRC cards.

What has not changed?
The official format remains 24 computer-based questions in 45 minutes. You need 75% or more to pass, equivalent to at least 18 correct answers. The fee remains £50 and the test must normally be booked online at least three days in advance.
Questions still come from Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents. GOV.UK says candidates will only be tested on information in that official guide.
What changed for eVisa holders?
If you have an eVisa, use a share code as identity evidence. Generate it from your UKVI account using the option for proving immigration status for another purpose.
What changed for expired BRP and BRC cards?
If you cannot access your eVisa, current guidance may allow an expired BRP or BRC. Your test must take place no later than 24 months after the printed expiry date, or by 31 December 2026, whichever is sooner.
What did not become valid ID?
A UK driving licence is not included in the current accepted-document list. Do not rely on older third-party articles that say it is accepted.
Do you need new study material?
Use material aligned to the current official handbook and verify administrative rules on GOV.UK. A “2026” label alone does not make a question bank accurate. Check explanations, review mistakes and practise all topics rather than memorising repeated questions.
