Life in the UK Test Results: What You Receive and How to Check

You are told whether you passed or failed on the day of your Life in the UK Test. If you pass, you receive a unique reference number that the Home Office uses to verify the result.

Quick facts

When you get the outcome
On test day
Current pass evidence
Unique reference number
Older evidence
Test reference ID letter
Pass mark
75% or more

When do you get the result?

GOV.UK says candidates are told whether they passed or failed on test day. You need 75% or more to pass. The official guidance does not promise that you will be given a detailed score breakdown.

What do you receive after passing?

You receive a unique reference number. Enter it in the relevant citizenship or settlement application so the Home Office can confirm the result.

Save the number securely with your application records. If your booking provider also displays it in your account or confirmation message, follow the provider’s current instructions for accessing it.

What about tests taken before 17 December 2019?

Older test evidence works differently. GOV.UK says candidates who sat the test before 17 December 2019 have a letter containing a test reference ID rather than today’s unique reference number.

What if an older letter is lost?

GOV.UK says to send a letter with your citizenship or settlement application explaining that the pass letter has been lost. Do not assume that losing the paper means the pass itself expired.

Does the result expire?

A previous pass does not normally expire. GOV.UK says people who have passed before do not need another test, including someone who passed for settlement and later applies for citizenship. Read the full pass-validity guide.

What if you failed?

You can rebook as many times as needed and pay £50 each time. Current GOV.UK guidance does not state a mandatory seven-day wait. Before paying again, use a fresh mock test to find the topics that need work.
